Shaykh Muhammad Sibghat-Allah Sirhindi Faruqi (1033-1122 AH)

Hazrat Khwājā Muhammad Sibghatullāh Fārūqī Sirhindī (1033-1122 AH) was the eldest son of Imam Muhammad Ma’sūm Fārūqī Sirhindi (1007-1079 AH) and one of the greatest masters of the Mujaddidi order of Sufism.

He was born on Friday 11 Rabi al-Thānī 1033 AH. His father and grandfather were away from home when he was born, so his name was not chosen by his mother who was waiting for them. When the two masters reached home a few days later, his grandfather Imam Rabbani saw the new born and said to him, “As-Salāmu Alaykum Mullā Sibghatullāh”. Thus his name became Muhammad Sibghatullāh.

He learned Islamic education from some of the finest scholars of his times, including his uncle Khwājā Muhammad Sa’īd Sirhindi (1005-1070 AH). He memorized the whole Quran in only forty days. Later he received spiritual training in the Mujaddidi path from his father and was awarded with Khilāfah.

During the later years of his life, the Sikhs had attacked the holy city of Sirhind and were at war with Muslims. Many followers of the Mujaddidi order were among the fighters during this war with the Kuffar. Khwaja Sibghatullah also had a wish to participate in this holy Jihad, but was too old for that. When the fight erupted, he went for the toilet but fell down. When he was brought back, the people saw a deep injury in his back caused by an arrow. Though he was at home, far away from the place of fighting, people wondered how was he injured. Later it turned out that someone called for his spiritual help in the war ground, and he helped him in physical form but was wounded there.

That wound did not heal and lasted for six months, until he received the martyrdom from it. According to the author of Maqamat Masoomi, he left this mortal world on Friday, 7 or 8 or 9 Rabi al-Thānī 1122 AH, at the age of 89.

He had many sons, out of which four lived to the adult age.

  1. Shaykh Abul Qāsim Sirhindi, died in 1082 AH at the age of 27. He was a khalifa of his grandfather Imam Muhammad Ma’sūm Sirhindi.
  2. Shaykh Muhammad Ismā’īl Sirhindi, d. 1136 AH, buried in Sirhind.
  3. Shaykh Ahlullāh Sirhindi, died on 5 Jamādā al-Thānī 1133 AH.
